Carnival in Gozo
46
Carnival in Malta and Gozo is one of the most awaited celebrations in the islands’ calendar. It provides the perfect excuse for people to dress up in colourfully dressed costumes and wear masks, in many villages and towns across both Malta and Gozo.
The main carnival celebrations of Gozo are held in Nadur and are especially known for their spontaneous carnival and disguising costumes, with many people dressing up to be simply unrecognizable. Some people even call this a Macabre or Grotesque Carnival. Unlike the main carnival events held in Valletta, the capital of Malta, the Nadur carnival is not planned out so it is sure to surprise you every year with something new by its satire and humour through improvised costumes. Local participants are often quiet while on the streets so as to be sure that they are completely unrecognizable. In fact, some people also call this the Silent Carnival.
The carnival in Nadur is usually held 5 days before Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent) and is surely a unique experience - definitely worth a visit.
